Georgian English Oak 18th Century Bachelors Chest of Drawers (England, circa 1750)

£4,950.00
A charming mid-18th century oak bachelors chest
of four long drawers, the top drawer fitted with
slides and compartments retaining original brass
handles throughout and raised on original shaped
bracket feet

(It's quite unusual to find such a formal design of chest
constructed from Oak, but this adds a real charm to the
piece and makes it significantly more unusual and rarer
than many of it's mahogany counterparts which you can
find. Our best guess is that it was constructed by a relatively
well skilled provincial craftsmen who had perhaps visited
workshops in London, or Lancaster, and got a taste for the
more formal town design, but when he returned home only
had oak timber available to him. Whatever it's origin it is
certainly a functional little chest of drawers, that has a real
elegance and has good quality construction. The oak timber
retains a great warmth and patina and it is a lovely extra touch
that it has managed to retain its original handles & feet).
