Georgian 18th Century Mahogany Pair Of Cutlery Knife Boxes (England, circa 1790)

£3,250.00
A delightful pair of George III Period mahogany knife boxes having
superbly figured, inlaid and crossbanded lift up lids to revealing
later suede lined interior compartments

(Cutlery boxes, or knife boxes as they have more commonly become
known were originally made to stand on the serving table or sideboard
in the dining room and house the bone handled, or silver handled, cutlery
which would have been extremely expensive in its own right hence the
lockable boxes for storage. They would normally have a variety of different
shaped and sized slots for the assortment of cutlery they would be required
to house. These particular boxes are lovely examples in terms of how well
figured they are, the inlaid decoration and the lovely colour. They have had
their fitted interiors removed and this has been replaced by a simple suede
type lining meaning that both boxes now have significant and useful storage
space.).
